Quilt College
Here is a list of Classes for this year's Quilt College April 23-24 at the Polk County Fairground, Rickreall, OR. Registration for members starts Feb 1 and non members on March 1, classes cost $15.00 for members and $20.00 for non members. The price includes up to 4 classes, 2 on Friday and 2 on Saturday. Making and using bias tape on quilts –Nancy Dudley Friday April 23 1:30 to 4:30 Two ways to make them and several ways to use them. You will need a machine for this class. 2. Scrap Catcher - Judy Craig Friday April 23 1:30 to 4:30 Keep your sewing area clean with this handy catch all bag to keep near your sewing machine for snips, threads, etc. 3. Quilt Smart fusible Foundation - Sylvia Dorney Friday April 23 1:30 to 4:30 Make a cell-phone tote, smart bag or quick holiday stocking with Sylvia and some Quiltsmart fusible foundation that takes the stress out of sewing. Plan to make two of the three items in this three hour class or make a roll-up ironing pad and one item 4. Long Arm Demo & Pot Holder - Jeanette Pitalo Friday April 23 1:30 to 4:30 5. Star Table Runner - Diane Bishop/Ladies of Liberty Mercantile Saturday 9 to noon Learn to make this star table runner using the no-waste Flying Geese method from Jo Morton. These units are oversized and trimmed after piecing to make perfect flying geese. This method makes it so easy to get your stars done perfectly! 6. Leaves - Michelle Byrum Friday April 23 1:30 to 4:30 This is an intermediate appliqué technique. You will learn to make realistic looking leaves with really thin veins from real leaves! You will need to press leaves of various sizes (nothing smaller than 5 inches square). Leaves can be from the same tree or plant. To press the leaves, place them between two sheets of waxed paper and place a heavy book on top. The object is to flatten the leaves only. They do not need to be totally dry. If you don't have any leaves or just don't have the time to dry them, never fear. I have plenty for use in the class! 7. Hand Appliqué - Jane Davis Friday April 23 1:30 to 4:30 Come learn appliqué with Jane and learn her special techniques. 8. Dessert Tin Pin Cushion - Amy Hancock Friday April 23 1:30 to 4:30 We will be making a small pin cushion using a dessert tin and a miniature quilt you will make during class. I will provide 2 dessert tins for each student, fiberfill and floral sand, enough for one pin cushion. 9. Stealth Binding - Tamara Blair-Friday April 23 6 to 9 How to do show quality binding-the quickest & finest way-You’ll be thrilled at how professional your quilt binding will turn out. 10. Free Motion Quilting on your Home Machine - Ron Riley April 23 6 to 9 This class will cover basic machine quilting; from choosing your quilt design to hands on quilting on your own sewing machine. Go beyond “stippling and meandering” to free form motifs and formal designs (requiring marking). Learn various methods of making designs and lots of personal tips to make quilting on your home machine fun and easy. Ron will demonstrate how he handles larger sized quilts and share his philosophy on machine quilting. We will have fun. YOU CAN DO THIS!!!! 11. Twinkle Quilt - Sally Blankenship April 23 6 to 9 Use as many as 168 fabrics or as few as 4 fabrics in the blocks to make this quilt. 12. Raggy Quilt - Karen Tanksley Friday April 23 1:30 to 4:30 Raggy quilts are made up of blocks which are machine quilted before they are joined together. The seams from joining the blocks are all turned to one side of the quilt then clipped every 1/2 inch, giving ruffled seams which are very cozy. Each quilt side can have its own pattern. 13. Twist & Turn - Wilma Zicker April 23 1:30 to 4:30 14. Folded Bag – Yvonne Katsnis April 23 6 to 9 Turn a prequilted fabric or one of your own quilted pieces (60”) into a bag with handles. Wonder what to do with all those sample blocks? Put them all together quilt the piece and bind it and bring it to class. 15. Name Badge Holder - Amy Hancock April 23 6 to 9 We will make a personalized Name Badge Holder that will be your constant companion and holder of your Mid Valley Quilt Guild Membership card. It has a plastic pocket in the front for your card and a larger ocket on the back for your Quilt Shop Discount Cards or Comfort Quilt Labels. Whatever you decide to hold you will make this your ID Necklace using your own scraps and/or fat quarters. 16. Hand Appliqué - Jane Davis April 23 6 to 9 Come learn appliqué with Jane and learn her special techniques. 17. Quilters Rule - Templates-Design Tools-Rulers- What they are and what to do with them-Pat Noonan. April 23 6 to 9 This class will give you an overall idea of how to use templates in designs appliqué and many other crafts. You will learn how to draw some amazing quilt designs and transfer them to your quilt blocks for either hand quilting or free motion machine quilting. And I also have 1’4” thick templates and rulers for long arm quilters. I’ll be showing you many types of rulers available from fixed to adjustable to help you reduce waste of time and fabrics. Have you ever wanted to design your own quilt? And you look for the right graph paper and all you can find is squares? Well, graph paper isn’t just a bunch of squares anymore. How about circles or ovals, Kaleidoscopes or triangles? If this is what you have been looking for, I’ll bring some with me so that you can see what is available to you. I’ll teach you some of the tricks & tips to help you open up many new possibilities of how to use the templates, design tools and rulers that you already have. And I will have a supply of Quilters Rule products for you to try and will also be available for purchase.Bring your questions and we will work on the solutions. 18. Hawaiian Appliqué - Pat Powell April 23 6 to 9 Hawaiian quilts are unique and different from the “traditional” type American quilts we are familiar with. Use needle turn appliqué to create a unique, two color Hawaiian quilt. A snowflake method of cutting pattern and fabric is used. 19. Fearless Feathers – Nancy Dudley-Saturday 9 to noon Feather quilting by machine isn't as bad as you think. There are techniques and designs that are much easier (and more fun) than the traditional designs. If you are a longarmer you obviously won't bring your machine but bring paper and pencil for ideas. Those whose machine is portable can practice with their machine. 20. Z’s Whimsy Woven Bag - Leslie Coleman Zeigen Saturday 9 to noon Create a delightful little bag of tulle, woven strips and trims. Leslie’s creativity and enthusiasm are contagious. You’ll be tempted to make these bags in several color waves to give as gifts. Beginners and veterans welcome. 21. Somersault - Karla Alexander Saturday 9 to noon From her new book- “Color Shuffle” 22. 9 Patch Shuffle - Barbara Anderson Saturday 9 to noon This quilt starts with oversized 9-patch blocks that get sliced, diced, and reassembled. By keeping the center squares constant, the blocks have a coordinated appeal. This is a quick, easy and fun way tomake a scrap quilt. 23. Nine Patch Charm Stars - Denise Balch Saturday 9 to noon Turn your oversized 9-patches into charming stars. This is a great technique for using up your scraps. The block goes beyond Disappearing 9-Patch by adding stitch and flip corners. This is a technique class. 24. Mini Lone Star - Diane Bowden Saturday 9 to noon A strip pieced Lone Star block. This block is made from 1 ½” strips (like Moda Honeybuns).There are no set in seams. The techniques you learn in this class you can translate into bigger Lone Stars. The only thing you really need to be successful with this technique is to cut accurately and be confident in your ¼” seam. 25. Machine Appliqué Techniques - Judy Craig Saturday 9 to noon Learn the secrets of faced, dimensional, invisible and blanket stitch appliqué 26. Stack & Whack - Wilma Zicker .This is a two session class (9:00 to 4:30) Learn the Stack & Whack techniques. You will need fabric with repeats to work with. 27. Sew What’s Hop Scotch - Vennie DeVoe Saturday 9 to noon A scrap quilt organized for the A.R, or OCD quilter. This will teach a technique I discovered while trying to organize the piecing for this version of Hopscotch, as designed by members of Sew What. Even though each 11/2 inch square if cut before sewing, we will use the chain-piecing technique to speed up the project. 28. Bear Paw Runner – Yvonne Katsnis Saturday 9 to noon I can have kits available to match the sample Christmas version, with a class fee of $10 to cover the expense. Paper Piecing - Kathy Rebelez Saturday 9 to noon Do you the like the precise results of paper piecing but are frustrated with all those papers to tear off? Come join us to learn some different techniques that will give you the accuracy of paper piecing without all those papers. Borders - Diane Tipton Saturday 1:30 to 4:30 Border class to learn straight borders in 2 styles; how to avoid floppy or too tight borders and mitered seams and corners + the 'emergency' seam. You may bring your problem quilt top for advice. 32. Artistic Fun - Jean jacket vest- Judy Furete Saturday 9 to noon Artistic fun: Using a traditional jean jacket- turn it into a fresh new look for the spring (or keep the sleeves, it’s up to you).Use contemporary fabrics, the ones we love but don’t want to cut, buttons, lace, paint, trims, beads and old jewelry- all the things in our drawer. Create a new funky fun look for your self or grandchild. 33. Jacket Class - Janet Story –This is a two session class Saturday 9 until 4:30 You saw her at the January Quilt Guild meeting 34. Fat Quarter Log Cabin - Sylvia Brun Saturday 1:30 to 4:30 This class uses fat quarters and a Marti Michell’s “MY FAVORITE LOG CABIN RULER” 1' & 2" finished strip size to complete the blocks 43. Reversible Quilt - Beryl Anderson Saturday 1:30 to 4:30 Double your fun by making “two at a time”. That’s right, the quilt is reversible. What’s more exciting is that construction is quick and easy because the quilt is quilted at the same time it is pieced. You will learn the rotary cutting method for cutting pieces, proper pressing techniques and the importance of sewing with correct tension. Skill level is basic to intermediate. Basic Supply List: Sewing machine, foot control & power cord Thread to match your project or a neutral thread (gray, beige, etc.) Extra bobbins Extra sewing machine needles Power strip or serge protector-recommended Scissors Pins Seam Ripper Hand sewing needle- you never know when this might be handy Any extra sewing machine feet necessary for your project Rotary cutter, mat, ruler and marking pencil Remember- you can see demonstrations, make pot holders, sew pillow cases or work on your own comfort or patriotic quilt. You can make it a weekend of fun and sewing plan on staying after or before your class and participate in the activities. |
