Miniature Quilts and More
Viviene Moore

A trunk show featuring a diverse range of the quilts I have made since I left the corporate world in 1992. For 10 years my emphasis was on miniature quilts, mostly using traditional patterns. In 2002 I started designing original quilts. My lecture is a discussion of the various directions my work has taken, and the influences on my quilting life.

Biography: My mother taught me to sew when I was a young girl, which started a lifelong passion for everything related to fiber arts. I have been making quilts since the early 1980’s. In 1993 I discovered paper foundation piecing, and fell in love with the challenge of making miniature quilts.

In 1992, while living in the Bay Area, I left the corporate world, and started teaching quilting classes at local quilt shops. In 2000, my husband retired and we moved to Salem, Oregon. I still continue to teach and lecture, and in 2006 started a line of patterns under the name “Vivienne Moore Designs”.

My miniature quilts have won several national awards, and my work has been featured in magazines and books, including several issues of Miniature Quilts magazine, Country Living magazine, 3 books on the subject of miniature quilts by Chitra Publishing, “Donna Kooler’s Encyclopedia of Quilting”, and Gai Perry’s “Color From the Heart”.

Mystery Quilt

Part One: The mystery begins!

The finished size will be approximately 40”X40” square, but you have the option of using the finished mystery quilt top as the medallion for a larger sized quilt.
CENTER(BIG(Fabrics (always the fun part!))
Fabric A - lightest and brightest. This fabric should stand out from the others. Good choices-yellow-gold, mustard, lime or fuchsia. A print is ok or a patterned fabric that reads prominently solid. You can use 3-5 fabrics that have similar coloration for a scrappy look. You will need ¾ yard or 1 yard for good measure.
Fabric B - deepest and darkest. This will be your main background and should be deep in tone; suggestions-navy, black, purples or a swirled batik. You need ¾ yard.
Fabric C - plaid or multi-print, medium value. Choose a fabric that is intermediate in color from fabrics A &B-try picking a plaid with colors from fabrics A&B. You will need 2/3 yard plaid or medium print.
Fabric D - a bold stripe. You will need 2/3 yard .You will need a clear contrast between the plaid (C) and the stripe.

Cutting-selvage to selvage

Fabric A: cut 1 strip 4.5” wide and 8 strips 2.5” wide
Fabric B: cut 4 strips 4.5” wide and 2 strips 2.5” wide
Fabric C: cut 4 strips 4.5” wide
Fabric D: cut 4 strips 4.5” wide

Next step-cutting and bagging squares

Fabric A: from the 4.5” strip, cut 4 squares 4.5”X4.5”; from the 8- 2.5” strips cut 128 squares each 2.5”X2.5”. Put into a plastic sandwich baggie.
Fabric B: from the four 4.5” strips cut 36 squares 4.5”X4.5”- Put into baggie. From the 2.5” strips cut 28 squares each 2.5’x2.5’-Put into baggie.

Wednesday Afternoon Work Party on Guild Day

I decided to add the work party because that is sort of what it is!! Plan to stay after morning guild meeting and sew.

There were only a few of us this last time, but we did have a good time and would love company. You must bring what ever you need to work with. We have an iron, ironing board, table risers and extension cords...that's it! I will bring some guild stash fabric and batting. There are always kits available, too.

If you want to come sew on your own projects, that is alright, too.

No Quilter Left Behind
The next series will be seasonal. Each will highlight a new technique or an adaptation of an old one. Now we need to get the 3-D bow ties made for the Christmas season. Complete three green bows and one red to make the wreath. Many were impressed with the “magic” of a bow-tie without a set-in-seam.Try it and you will realize how cool this block is. The directions will be at the October meeting, but if you can't be there I can send it to you. However, remember the SASE (that means with a stamp on it). This block will be due at the November meeting which gives the winners time to make a table runner, placemats or something great for the season.
